Joe Alexander and the Cubans recordings from 1954 released on CD
A recently published CD by Music Productions b.v. of Utrecht, the Netherlands, contains the two hard-to-find Joe alexander songs "Oh Maria" and "I Hope These Words Will Find You Well". The CD title is "Chuck Berry Rocks" (Digimode Entertainment GTR39508) and was released as part of a series of low-cost CDs covering Rock'n'Roll legends such as Elvis Presley, Bill Haley, Little Richard and Gene Vincent. The CD contains Berry's first six Chess singles. As bonus tracks the CD comes with these two recordings by Joe Alexander and the Cubans.
In 1954 Chuck Berry used the alias "Chuck Berryn" when performing in St. Louis. American Federation of Musicians' recording contracts show that in 1954 someone with that name played guitar during a recording session for the Ballad label in St. Louis. Nowadays most experts, such as Fred Rothwell, count the Ballad session as Berry's first recording. More at the Chuck Berry Collectors Blog:

Chuck Berry received the Golden Camera
Chuck Berry received the Golden Camera Lifetime Achievement Award in front of about 900 invited guests at Ullstein Halle in Berlin, Germany, February 6, 2008. HÖRZU, Germany's leading television program magazine award the GOLDEN CAMERA to honor exceptional achievements in the areas of television, film and entertainment. The ceremony was televised on German Television Channel ZDF on Friday, February 8th 2008 at 9:15 pm.
Chuck Berry received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Klaus Meine of Scorpions-fame, who introduced Chuck as one of the greatest Rock'n'Roll legends of all time who broke down many barriers and whose music is timeless. A short clip with concert footage and people like John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Little Richard praising Chuck Berry was shown. Then Chuck himself entered the stage. He mentioned that a girl that had lost her arms and legs, but won an award as an actor that night (she played in a movie about the Contergan-Scandal, pills that made people to cripples) moved him the most. He spoke some words in German: "Ich möchte gerne Deutsch sprechen" (I would like to speak German) and added some verses of his beautiful poem "My Dream" to his short, but impressive, speech. He then went on to mime to a full playback version of "Roll Over Beethoven". The orginally scheduled live performance did not take place due to some equipment missing. The band included Rudolf Schenker on the guitar, Steffi Stephan on the bass, Curt Cress on the drums and Joja Wendt on the piano.
After the ceremony, he dined with Robert De Niro and Hillary Swank in an expensive Berlin restaurant. All in all a very special evening and we look forward to welcome Chuck Berry back to Europe soon, but this time live!
Chuck Berry is featured in two major German publications; Hörzu (released 01.02.2008) and Bild am Sonntag (released 03.02.2008).

Darnell Martin will start shooting movie about Chess Records in early March
Adrien Brody will play Chess Records founder Leonard Chess in "Cadillac Records", a musical biopic that follows the turbulent lives of such artists as Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Willie Dixon and Etta James. Additionally, Jeffrey Wright will play Waters in the tale of sex, violence, race and rock'n'roll in 1950's Chicago. Writer/director Darnell Martin will start shooting the Sony BMG Film project in early March in New Jersey and Mississippi. Also newly cast in the film are Columbus Short, Cedric the Entertainer, Emmanuelle Chriqui and Tammy Blanchard. Brody recently wrapped the indie film "The Brothers Bloom", while Wright is filming the new James Bond movie in London. Cedric the Entertainer has mentioned to www.blackfilm.com that Beyoncé Knowles has been cast to play Etta James. It is not told who will play Chuck Berry, but maybe himself like he does in "American Hot Wax" 1978.

Jerry Zaks directing another movie about Chess Records
Alessandro Nivola, David Oyelowo and Jon Abrahams will sail the musical waters together in the feature biopic "Chess". Jerry Zaks is directing. The story chronicles the life of Leonard Chess (Nivola), a self-made music impresario and renowned record company executive who brought blues into the public eye and jump-started the careers of some of the music industry's biggest names, including Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry.
Oyelowo will play Waters, while Abrahams will play Phil Chess, Leonard's younger brother who worries when Leonard becomes involved with a singer who has been signed to their label. The film will compete against Sony BMG Film's "Cadillac Records", which also centers on the rise and fall of Chess' blues label Chess Records. That film stars Adrien Body and Jeffrey Wright and is set to begin production in March. The script for "Chess" was penned by Peter Wortmann and Bob Conte and is being produced by Jonathan Mitchell, Les Alexander and Andrea Baynes through Checkmate Prods. Shooting is set to begin April 7 in New Orleans.

Chuck Berry at Berklee Performance Center, Apr 13
At 81, Chuck Berry doesn't answer the bell every time it rings. But he did when Woody Giessmann came calling. "I guess lady luck's on my side", said Giessmann, who got Berry to play at next month's benefit for Right Turn, the Arlington-based nonprofit for artists and entertainers dealing with drug and alcohol problems. "I said, Why don't we get the father of rock'n'roll to perform, and he said yes". Berry - whose hits include "Johnny B. Goode", "Maybellene", and "Roll Over Beethoven" - will be backed by something approaching a supergroup, including Giessmann, who used to be the Del Fuegos drummer, Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Rolling Stones session players Chuck Leavell and Tim Ries, former Doobie Brother guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Joan Jett's onetime ax man Ricky Byrd, Barry Goudreau, formerly of the band Boston, and singer Kate Taylor. The show takes place April 13 at the Berklee Performance Center.

Johnny B. Goode 50th Anniversary, March 31th, 2008
"Johnny B. Goode" was realeased by Chess Records, March 31, 1958. The song is ranked by Rolling Stone as the seventh greatest song ever on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Written by Berry, the song is a rock'n'roll version of the American dream — a poor country boy becomes a star by hard work and inspired guitar playing. The name "Goode" is taken from the street where Chuck Berry was born, 2520 Goode Avenue, in St. Louis. The name of the street is today Annie Malone Drive (a woman who helped homeless children).
Berry's recording of the song was included on the Voyager Golden Record, attached to the Voyager spacecraft 1977 as representing rock'n'roll, one of three American songs included among many cultural achievements of humanity. Cover versions include Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter, Elton John, The Beach Boys, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Hanson, Green Day, Sex Pistols, Ratdog, The Grateful Dead, and many more.
