Chuck Berry's first-ever Prague show

The world would be a much duller place without Chuck Berry, the man who influenced The Beatles, Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones just as much as those acts influenced modern music.

Now 78, the man behind Johnny B. Goode, No Particular Place To Go, Roll Over Beethoven and dozens of other rock'n'roll classics, plays his first-ever Prague show on January 16th, in the Lucerna passage's great hall. Berry's backing band will be The Joe Richardson Express, who are also playing in a support slot.

As with Jerry Lee Lewis's recent Prague show, the promoters are holding an afterparty in the adjoining Lucerna Music Bar, where there'll be a live set from the David Murphy Band, rock'n'roll DJs and a Pulp Fiction-style twist contest. More info at: www.prague.tv

Johnson played with Berry on hits including "Roll Over Beethoven" and became part of rock'n'roll legend when Berry wrote "Johnny B. Goode" in his honour. And Berry is now determined to play a gig to commemorate Johnson, and he hopes to play St Louis, Missouri's 70.000 capacity Edward Jones Dome if he can. Berry says, "Johnnie and I have always been friends. He gave me a break. We'll fill that sucker (the venue)". But ageing Berry doesn't want anybody to mourn him when he dies. He adds, "My turn is coming very soon. Would you shed a tear for Chuck? I hope not, because I don't see why one should weep when something inevitable must come. "At 78, I'm glad to be anywhere, anytime". "No pianist has played piano as fluently and harmonically to my style of songs as did Johnnie Johnson from the beginning of my career up to now", said Chuck Berry upon learning the devastating news. He ticked the ivories with a grace and professionalism seldom found in musicians today. According to Berry, there were approximately fourteen "Johns" that inspired the Berry hit "Johnny B. Goode", there was only one irreplaceable Johnnie Johnson. He was an artist whose melodic creations will continue to live on for decades to come. The songs is "Don't Lie To Me", "Betty Jean", "All Aboard", "Carol", "Talkin' Bout You", "Trick or Treat" and "Come On". The Groovie Ghoulies are a punk rock'n'roll band from Sacramento, California, consisting of Kepi (bass), Roach (guitar) and Scampi (drums). This is their 9th full length album. Other albums is "Monster Club", "Monkey Business" and "Helper Monkeys - No Release CD". Here is the liner notes on the album cover: It's been 50 years since "Maybellene" roared out of the speakers of the earliest rock'n'roll radios, and it's still going, every day on on oldies radio, right alongside "Johnny B. Goode"! Those are great songs everybody knows, and the name Chuck Berry is already inscribed in all the history books. But how about "Betty Jean" or "All Aboard" or "Trick or Treat"? We here in Groovie Ghoulies are hardly rock'n'roll know-it-alls, but we want to share the gospel of Chuck Berry, to turn a whole new batch of kids on to some great tunes that we love" We've included some Berry greats that we learned via the Rolling Stones, like "Don't Lie To Me", "Carol" and "Talkin' Bout You"... Stones had a way of taking a Chuck Berry song (already great!) and boosting it even further with rockin' pasion so it explodet right in your face! You can trace the best of rock (Jonathan Richman, Tom Petty) and punk straight back through the Sex Pistols (Johnny B. Goode), New York Dolls (Back In The USA), Pretty Things (Don't Lie To Me) and Rolling Stones (everything!) right on back to Mr. Berry himself! Even Elvis Presley! But there is so much more to Chuck Berry than oldies radio and a greatest hits could ever cover. The veterans know that he was in toutch with the very pulse of American youth at the time, and that's why the songs are still vital and important today... they are timeless tales delivered in 2 1/2 minutes, or les! In a world where modern bands can spend two or more years making a record, Chuck and his pals were in and out of the studio in just two or more days. What's best about Mr. Berry is that at 70+ years, he's still out there every month in St. Louis, playing live for YOU at the Duck Room, having YOU sing along with the SOLD OUT crowd to all his great tunues, because he knows what's good for you, that great rock'n'roll not only feels good, but has the power to heal! So Hail! Hil! Rock'n'Roll! Let's get lost in this, body and soul! Let's get BERRY'D ALIVE!!! Eternal Thanks to Mr. Charles Edward Anderson Berry for fifty plus years of great music and inspiration! Check this album at: Groovie Ghoulies site Source: Morten Reff -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sep 17 / 2005 New tribute album from Bronco Records Bronco Records also has a new tribute album (LP) out, named "A Tribute to Mr. ROCK". The songs is "CAROL" with Sonny Vincent (USA), "COME ON" with The Jerry Speeder Gang (France), "I WANT TO BE YOUR DRIVER" with The Playbacks (USA), "DEAR DAD" with The Hent chmen (USA), "VIVA ROCK & ROLL" with Los High Sierras (Spain), "I LOVE YOU" with The Murrays (Spain), "BYE BYE JOHNNY" with Foggy Mental Breakdown (Spain), "SCHOOL DAY" with Rockzilla (Spain), "SWEET LITTLE ROCK & ROLLER" with Nullskattesnylterne (Norway), "I GOT TOFIND MY BABY" with The Bellerays (USA), "CLUB NITTY GRITTY" with The Maggots (Sweden), "PROMISED LAND" with Sin City Six (Spain), "OH BABY DOLL" with Los Chicos (Spain), "LET IT ROCK" with The Cool Jerks (USA), "DRIFTIN' HEART" with Speedball Baby, "THIRTY DAYS" with Callahans (Spain), "MAN AND THE DONKEY" with Gore Gore Girls (USA) and "LITTLE QUEENIE" with Lost Acapulco (Mexico DF). Here is the liner notes by Morten Reff: For the first time anywhere Bronco Records have gathered together some famous rock bands from a variety of countries including the USA, Spain, Mexico, Sweden, Norway and France, all playing Chuck Berry's music! The music of Mr. Berry appeals to all kinds of artists and musicans and this album is testimony to the never ending story of Berry cover versions. Before this album there have been tribute albums from The Rolling Stones, Cub Coda, Jim & Jesse Bluegrass, two R&B instrumental albums plus several others. This, however, is quite different, as you will hear, because it contains many obscure Berry songs like "Club Nitty Gritty", "I Want To Be Your Driver", "Drifting Heart", "Man And The Donkey", "Viva Rock & Roll" and "I Love You". Some songs are covered for the first time which shows the artists know their Chuck Berry repertoire. They have not just chosen the hits but have dug deep into the musical treasure of Chuck Berry. It's a guaranteed fact that is a rockin' album, exclusively produced by Bronco Records. And you won't find these songs on any other LP's. Let It Rock! Check this album at: Bunker Graphics news site Source: Morten Reff and www.bunkergraphics.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sep 17 / 2005 The tribute album "Brown Eyed Handsome Man: St. Louis Salutes the Father of Rock and Roll" The tribute album (CD) "Brown Eyed Handsome Man: St. Louis Salutes the Father of Rock and Roll" is released nationally with proceeds benefiting listener-supported radio station KDHX-FM (88.1). It boasts 19 Berry tracks by local and state-based artists, from music legends such as Fontella Bass to regional favorites such as Waterloo, Magnolia Summer, and The Rockhouse Ramblers. Here is the songs: "BROW EYED HANDSOME MAN" with Fontella Bass, "COME ON" with The Bottle Rockets, "BEAUTIFUL DELILAH" with Earl, "ALMOST GROWN" with Fairchild, "WHY SHOULD WE END THIS WAY" with Jay Farrar, "TULANE" with Rockhouse Ramblers, "CLUB NITTY GRITTY" with Tinhorn, "JAGUAR AND THE THUNDERBIRD" with The Skeletons, "NO MONEY DOWN" with Soulard Blues Band, "VIVA ROCK & ROLL" with Bennie Smith & the Urban Express, "NO PARTICULAR PLACE TO GO" with Waterloo, "RAMONA SAY YES" with The Gentleman Callers, "LITTLE QUEENIE" with The Phonocaptors, "YOU NEVER CAN TELL" with Gumbohead, "SWEET LITTLE SIXTEN" with Highway Matrons, "BYE BYE JOHNNY" with Bob Reuter & Palookaville, "THIRTY DAYS" with The Orbits, "JOHNNY B. GOODE" with Trip Daddys and "AROUND AND AROUND" with Magnolia Summer. Here is a review by Richard Riegel of the Harp Magazine: Per Bruce Springsteen, one time when he was scheduled to accompany Chuck Berry on stage, and asked the master what numbers were on the set list, Berry said slyly, "Why, we’re going to do some Chuck Berry songs". With a self-made canon so hugely influential yet so starkly self-contained and inimitable, Chuck wasn't just jiving Bruce. On "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" 19 St. Louis-area artists cruise through their brown-eyed townsman's classic catalog, in a benefit album for community radio station KDHX. Their various takes on Berry's songs are energetically roots-rocking, respectful readings that celebrate their idol without ever cutting him; as the British Invasion groups discovered years ago, only Chuck can apply that subtle leer that makes his own records so provocative. But the songs remain first causes of rock'n'roll, whoever does them, and this album is a nonstop boogerator. Among the standouts are the brilliant story songs: "No Money Down" by the Soulard Blues Band, "Tulane" by the Rockhouse Ramblers and the Bottle Rockets’ chugging "Come On". Fontella Bass turns the title cut away from Berry's sarcastic, coded black-pride affirmation and into a leisurely jazz standard of sorts, even as Fairchild's "Almost Grown" drips pomo-jailbait attitude all over the motel room. Somewhere around St. Louis, Chuck Berry is listening to this album with a knowing smile. He seeks several hundred thousand dollars for each of the songs including "Johnny B. Goode" and "My Ding-A-Ling". "Unlike many recording stars of his era, Berry owns all the publishing rights to his songs", his lawyer, Peter Haviland, said. The singer also claims the firms failed to obtain licences to sell karaoke versions of his songs, including the track "Maybellene". Read more about Berry's sue here Source: BBC News
