Rock'n'Roll's 50th anniversary celebration starting July 5th, 2004

"Rock & Roll 50TH Anniversary®" is the official clearinghouse for the celebration of what promises to be one of the most important events of our lifetime. Starting date: July 5, 2004 - 50 years to the day that Elvis Presley, in the studio at Sun Records in Memphis, records "That's Alright Mama". Ending date: July 5, 2005.

During this period we see what was to become rock and roll developing, virtually simultaneously, in Memphis via Sam Phillips and Sun Records, and in Chicago with Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley for Chess Records. In the fall of 1954 Alan Freed officially attached a phrase he'd been using on his radio show for several years to a musical show he was producing, "The Rock & Roll Coronation Ball".

March 1955 saw the movie "Blackboard Jungle" released. The movie's opening scene features Bill Haley and the Comets performing "Rock Around The Clock" which then climbs to #1 on the charts and is generally credited as the first rock & roll song to hit #1. Chuck Berry recorded "Maybellene" May 21, 1955, and the song was a hit on Billboard Hot 100 in July 1955 (climbs to #5).

Other breakthrough rock & roll artists 1955 was Fats Domino and Little Richard. Soon followed Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Jerry Lee Lewis, Wanda Jackson and many more. Whatever the previous history might have been this one event introduced rock & roll to millions and it never looked back. More info at: www.rockandroll50th.com

Debut album from Chuck Berry and rock's first soundtrack album remastered and expanded in celebration of Rock'n'Roll's 50th anniversary

In 1954, Bill Haley & His Comets’ realised "Rock Around The Clock. It is one of many firsts now celebrated during the genre's 50th anniversary year. Along with the full-length debut albums from Haley and Buddy Holly (The "Chirping" Crickets), Geffen/UMe will issue digitally remastered and expanded editions of "After School Session", the debut album from Chuck Berry, and "Rock, Rock, Rock" the genre's first soundtrack album and the first album ever released by Chess Records, on February 10, 2004. Each features bonus tracks, the original liner notes and a new essay. "Rock, Rock, Rock" originally released in December 1956, included the four songs performed in the film plus previously released singles by them. Also heard on what was legendary Chess Records' first LP were the Berry classics "Maybellene" (#1 R&B/#5 pop), "Thirty Days (To Come Back Home)" (#2 R&B) and "Roll Over Beethoven" (#2 R&B/#29 pop). "After School Session" originally released in May 1957, was the second album from Chess and Berry's first. Included were every master completed during his first four recording sessions and not issued on "Rock, Rock, Rock" plus a pair of songs from his fifth session. The updated edition adds three of those "Rock, Rock, Rock" tracks: "Thirty Days", "You Can't Catch Me" and "Maybellene". But it was "School Day (Ring Ring Goes The Bell)", which charted the month prior to the album's release, that became the record's most successful track. Eventually #1 R&B/#3 pop, "School Day" featured the "Hail, hail rock'n'roll" lyric that became the title of a 1987 biopic/concert documentary on Berry, who in 2004 sees his rebellious offspring pass a major milestone. "Johnny B. Goode" 7th at Rolling Stone list

Rolling Stone magazine has named the top 500 songs of all time in its new issue, and, well, the No. 1 song isn't exactly a complete unknown. Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" tops the list, compiled from votes by 172 critics and musicians that included Brian Wilson, Joni Mitchell, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco and others — in a special issue that hits newsstands Friday. Following Dylan is the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," John Lennon's "Imagine," Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and "Aretha Franklin's "Respect". Rounding out the top ten are "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys, "Johnny B. Goode" by Chuck Berry, the Beatles' "Hey Jude," Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," and Ray Charles' "What'd I Say". "Maybellene" is voted as 18th.

Chuck Berry's first-ever Prague show

The world would be a much duller place without Chuck Berry, the man who influenced The Beatles, Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones just as much as those acts influenced modern music.

Now 78, the man behind Johnny B. Goode, No Particular Place To Go, Roll Over Beethoven and dozens of other rock'n'roll classics, plays his first-ever Prague show on January 16th, in the Lucerna passage's great hall. Berry's backing band will be The Joe Richardson Express, who are also playing in a support slot.

As with Jerry Lee Lewis's recent Prague show, the promoters are holding an afterparty in the adjoining Lucerna Music Bar, where there'll be a live set from the David Murphy Band, rock'n'roll DJs and a Pulp Fiction-style twist contest. More info at: www.prague.tv
